My business is down

You might be freaking out and thinking that your business is broken as a result of the Covid-19 lock-down and economic recession that may follow.

Don’t panic!

For many of us, we sell products that are seasonal anyway. And Ugandans are known to be creative and hustle various jobs…

But there are also plenty of things that you can do for your business, that make you come out even stronger!  Alexa Diaries has put together some tips for you.

1. Get on Social media& online sales platforms

An online presence is important for outbound marketing because it reinforces your brand and what you offer to your target market. It’s also vital for inbound marketing because quality online content will help attract customers even if they haven’t heard of your brand.

eCommerce platforms provide an opportunity to break free of the limitation that physical outlets impose, enabling SMEs to sell their items of inventory stock to a much wider audience and beyond geographical borders.

Social media is an essential piece of your business marketing strategy. Social platforms help you connect with your customers, increase awareness about your brand, and boost your leads and sales. With more than three billion people around the world using social media every month, it’s no passing trend

2. create a customer Emailing List

Most Internet entrepreneurs know that having a mailing list is very important to your business. You can use social networks to reach out to potential customers, but you need a mailing list to maximize your reach.

Email doesn’t come and go and doesn’t you can control it unlike some of the social media platforms. There are several  handy tools to automate mailings such as MailChimp. Now is a good time to go through your pockets and shelves and gather all those business cards and finally enter them into a list.  It is worth it!

Create a PROFESSIONAL email account

I once met a minister (let me not mention names) who gave me her business card with a yahoo email address. I have to admit I felt sorry for the lady. All her efforts suddenly seemed to make less sense.  So, yes… it is important to have a professional email account for your.  Impression matters!

Routing your email through your business’s domain name shows that your business is well-established and genuine, and is likely to make customers feel more comfortable dealing with you.

3. Make sure your website is attractive and easy to find

If you haven’t tried this yet, do it now: whip out your smartphone or tablet and navigate to your website. You’d be surprised how many business owners have never done this, even though they use their phones all the time to order pizza.

So now that you’re there, what do you see? Teeny-tiny text? What are the graphics doing? How easy is it to navigate? If you are dismayed by what you see, then we urge you, right now, to consider a website redesign. Getting a website makeover isn’t just a cosmetic luxury; it’s a business necessity. The Internet has progressed a million miles in the last five years alone and the dizzying pace of change, particularly with regards to the march toward a more mobile web, is not going to stop any time soon.

4. create quality content & photos

We live in the age of the “camera in everyone’s pocket” and with more than 2.5 billion camera phones in use we are entering a new dynamic era around image creation and content.

If you have an online store, issue press releases or even just have a Facebook business “page”, then here are many reasons to publish images and photos as part of your business marketing tactics.

  1. Articles with images get 94% more total views
  2. 60% of consumers are more likely to consider or contact a business when an image shows up in local search results
  3. In an e-ccommerce site, 67% of consumers say the quality of a product image is “very important” in selecting and purchasing a product
  4. In an online store, customers think that the quality of a products image is more important than product-specific information (63%), a long description (54%) and ratings and reviews (53%)

Phones can do a lot. But for really catchy images consider hiring a professional photographer. When you hire a photographer, you are not just paying for them to come out and take photos, you are also paying for the time it takes to edit those photos. I am telling you, having a good body of photographs of your business, product, team and process is worth every penny!

5. write a business plan

and turn it into a pitch deck

A business plan really helps you get depth and length in your plans. A pitch deck, also known as a start-up or investor pitch deck, is a presentation that helps potential investors learn more about your business. Both are useful to have. A pitch deck presentation usually consists of several slides that help you tell a compelling story about your business.

There are several business plan templates online that provide a useful starting point.

Business Canvas Model is a good way to help you define and understand your business.

6. Educate yourself

attend a seminar or online Course

Never stop learning and trying to develop new ideas and knowledge that will help you in life and your business.

During the Covid lock-down many business incubators and hubs organised Zoom conferences that people could listen in to. There are a many free courses that you can do to improve yourself which are online. Take advantage of this time to learn a new skill

7. Market yourself

volunteer as a speaker and share your experience

Personal promotion is another form of marketing but separate from marketing your business. You work on your personal brand and public recognition so that people know the person behind the business. The better you are known, the more opportunities will come your way.
